Titanic mystery over violin 'from band leader who played on'

An auctioneer has hired experts to try to verify claims by the owner of the century old instrument that it belonged to Wallace Hartley, the leader of the vessels eight-man musical ensemble. If proved, it could become the most valuable Titanic artefact ever to be considered for auction. But the claim is being treated with caution as a result. Hartley and his fellow musicians earned legendary status for their decision to play on as the ship sank on its maiden voyage on April 15, 1912. They are said to have played the hymn Nearer My God to Thee after the...

The Barrett-Jackson company has posted photos of the hearse on its website, along with a history of the vehicle. |

John Wayne's personal items are up for auction

Ethan Wayne, the youngest son of Hollywood legend John Wayne, hates to have anything in his pockets because as a young boy he couldn't go out of the house with his dad without a stack of business cards that read, "Good Luck, John Wayne" on one side and the Duke's name typed on the other side stuffed in his pockets. "He would always take care of the fans no matter how busy he got," said Wayne, 49, who is named after his father's character in John Ford's influential 1956 western "The Searchers." "If he couldn't sign [an autograph] or talk...

When last I posted about the passing of my friend Joel Rosenberg, Hot Air readers reached out to offer their financial support to his family, especially after his activism on behalf of Second Amendment rights left them in a big hole with legal and court fees. Unfortunately, the web site that had the tip-jar information was hacked prior to Joels death, which no one knew until his wife began wondering where the donations were going. The hack didnt occur on the PayPal side (it was on the website), which means that PayPal wont indemnify Felicia for the losses. If you...
Horrible 5 Year Auction Sends Treasury Complex Into A Tailspin, 5 Year Yield Surges
Thursday 24th of May 2012 07:48:02 PM

It has been a long time since we had seen a 5 Year auction as ugly as today's: printing at a 1.615% high yield, the 5 Year had a 3.5 bps tail off the bat to the 1.58% WI where it was trading before. The internals were just as ugly, with the Bid To Cover coming at 2.59 a plunge from May's 3.20, and the lowest since June 2010. Not surprisingly, Indirect interest evaporated once again, tumbling from 47.1% to just 37.6%, with Primary Dealers having to take up more than half, or 52.1%, and the remainder going to Direct...

Michigan --(Ammoland.com)- A rare German Luger pistol once owned by aviation pioneer Howard Hughes could reach new heights when it goes up for auction in Solana Beach, Calif. on September 1, 2011 from Craig Gottlieb Militaria Auctions. The iconic handgun was used in the 1930 epic World War I film Hells Angels, which Hughes directed. The gun was used in the final scene of the Hollywood blockbuster that introduced actress Jean Harlow to the silver screen. It was one of the most expensive talkies ever produced. It was also notable for introducing the phrase excuse me while I put on...

Government auctions Unabombers propertyBy Ylan Q. Mui, Published: May 13 There is nothing sinister about the gray hooded sweatshirt anymore, no mystery behind the aviator sunglasses. Once, they were among the hallmarks of Ted Kaczynski, the anarchist Unabomber who killed three people and injured almost two dozen more during a nearly 20-year reign of terror. Now, his old clothes adorn a mannequin in a sterile government office in an online photo tagged Unabomb0001. This is the first of 51 lots of Kaczynskis personal belongings that the government will auction online next week in what amounts to Uncle Sams version of...
Treasury Math: #Winning (Feds caught violating debt limit alert)

We have a quick question for the Treasury Secretary: according to today's DTS, as of close yesterday, the Treasury had $14.274 trillion in debt subject to the ceiling of $14.294 trillion, or a $20 billion "buffer." To the best of our knowledge there were no redemptions today, and certainly none in the non-Bill pipeline this week. So, uh, how exactly did Tim Geithner auction off $32 billion today? (and plans to auction off another $40 billion tomorrow and Thursday)

There is only so long that the Bundesbank can keep ignoring the fact that it has recently started piling on failed auction after failed auction. Today, Germany tried to sell 5 billion in 2 Year 1% Schatz notes. And while the official tally on the auction was a 1.1 Bid To Cover at a 0.92% average yield, just above our own 3 Year auction yesterday, (and a drop from the 1.4 previously) this was yet another failed auction, as the bank managed to get only 4.33 billion in competitive and non-competitive bids. The kicker: the Bundesbank retained 995 million of...

The 18th century Qianlong porcelain vase had been estimated to fetch between £800,000 and £1.2 million by Bainbridges, the provincial auction house handling the sale. The 18th century Qianlong-dynasty porcelain vase is believed to have fetched the highest price for any Chinese artwork sold at auction However both the auctioneers and the owners were stunned when it went for the highest price of any Chinese artwork sold at auction. The elaborately decorated piece was put up for sale by a brother and sister who found it while clearing out their parents home in Pinner, north-west London after they recently died.

Bill Clinton sought to persuade Rep. Kendrick Meek to drop out of the race for Senate during a trip to Florida last week and nearly succeeded. Meek agreed twice to drop out and endorse Gov. Charlie Crists independent bid in a last-ditch effort to stop Marco Rubio, the Republican nominee who stands on the cusp of national stardom. Meek, a staunch Clinton ally from Miami, has failed to broaden his appeal around the state and is mired in third place in most public polls, with a survey today showing him with just 15 percent of the vote....

...A mono-sound copy Two Virgins, which he recorded with Yoko Ono, is expected to fetch at least £2,500. When the avant-garde LP was released in November 1968 it was notable for being sold in brown paper bags because the sleeve controversially featured a naked picture of the famous couple on the cover. Although a limited release of 5,000 stereo versions of the album were available in shops, fans had to write to the record label to purchase a mono copy of the record. The exact number of mono copies sold is not known, but auction organisers say it is likely...

Good news for Elvis Presley's creepiest fans, as a set of tools from the singer's autopsy are to be auctioned next month... are among the items that will come under the hammer at what is perhaps the grisliest sale in rock'n'roll history. According to a spokeswoman for Leslie Hindman Auctioneers, a senior embalmer at the Memphis Funeral Home set the tools aside after Presley's 1977 funeral, waiting decades before deciding to sell to the highest bidder. "The mortician, who prepared the body, retained this tag and the instruments, along with the preparation room case report, the case sheet, dry cleaning...
